On Wednesday the State Department described the U.S. relationship with Russia as "complicated."
Russian President Vladimir Putin has a harsher assessment, saying trust is gone.

"To a large extent the trust in U.S. ties is lost. Why is this happening? We believe we are not to blame. Why? Because those double standard approaches always disappoint us."
In his annual televised phone-in he says the problems predate the crisis in Ukraine.
