Surprise Me!

The pre-dawn is shattered
By incessant yowling
“Oh shut up you stupid dog! ”
I implore
Then it hits me: it’s actually
A hellhound’s howling!
So I refrain from poisoning
The Jack Russel next door.
Taking a calming breath
Of freshly-polluted air
And in through the window
Rancid smoke curled
I stare blankly at the neighbours
Glaring back at me
“Hurry! ” they cry
“It’s the end of the world! ”
“And what the hell are we to do? ”
I implore
“To deal with the inevitable
Boredom of the Longest Day?
We’re hardly trained soldiers
For The Third World War
There’s nothing you can do –
So piss off and pray.”
I’m choosing to be hypnotised
By the macabre cinema’s red screen
(‘Coz, seriously, playing wartime Heroine
Would make me yawn)
From my rooftop, Wholesale Murder
Is so wonderfully obscene
Eating popcorn, shooting smack
And de facing the dawn.
Neighbours shattered dreams
Draw beautiful bloodshed
The midday bloodbath so hot
It revives my nightmares
Pregnant mothers choke on the decay
Of exquisite red
“Suffer ‘n die! ” I laugh,
Briefly amused, “Nobody cares! ”
The way to Heaven is lit
By screaming Totem Poles
As blazing kids careen in panic
‘Round the scorched earth
I smirk as they burn fleshy feet
On Hell’s hot coals
The sick ‘lil jokes should’ve
Been slaughtered at birth.
Saturday night darkness has fallen
Oh, god am I bored!
(Mother Nature’s silver screen
Is B-grade, you see?)
“’Armageddon’ and such movies
Have spoiled us! ” I implored
“So can we just stay in tonight
And watch a DVD? ”
