Surprise Me!

hailey wohlwend - The Rocking Chair

Small and tiny I poke my head out from underground,
I'm not a mole nor a snake that moves without a sound
No - for I am a redwood tall and proud
As a sapling we were a forest - a vast crowd
But slowly one by one my family all fell
Someday I suppose mankind will take me as well
But for now I'm alone on mountains peak
And though I have neither ear to hear nor mouth to speak
Survival in nature is not for the weak
And often times a girl would come to me
This ancient wise old redwood tree
Until alas I to am gone
With a single cone left to be my spawn
Our forest has hope
At a building dark and forlorn
I feel the girl - my friend Lisa mourn
Inside my limbs are cut off my knotholes removed
I weep bitter tree tears mankind is so shrewd
So much of me is cast aside thrown away wasted
Until whats left of me is pasted
Into my foolish new form
And from these various pieces a rocking chair is born
They polish me with varnish glossed just so
Then they ship me away to a store i now go
In the back of the store I sit gathering dust
Door closed hinges rust
After 5 years of sitting out back
I'm taken up front in a large stack
Then one day a woman came inside
Her tiny baby being given a piggyback ride
Lisa?
Yes shed grownup since I'd been cut down
She was raising a family in this little town
And somehow Lisa knew it was me
Her old friend the redwood tree
She bought me took me home
I was no longer alone
And she taught me something yes indeed
Not of mans wars anger or greed
But wise advise that I now pass on to you
So listen well people of the world all 6 billion (and 2)
For as she once said;
There are only 2 things that soften sorrow
Music...
and tomorrow

and guess what
my forest lives...
