When we sang 'Silent Night'
our voices welled up
from the depth of a Memory
beyond our remembering.
Thick bass, clear tenor,
peaceful alto and quietly
ecstatic soprano voices
poured forth to forge
a liquid vehicle of sound,
sound that broke through Time,
uniting audience and singers
with the song's author
and the Nativity itself.
I listened:
the night was silent,
the night was holy.
In its enveloping Spirit,
we too were being born.
