Surprise Me!

I know a place where Dragons fly.
Not scaly monsters in the sky
but delicate and very small
and they come to me when I call.

Their skin is silky soft and warm
and when they trust you they will swarm
around your head in antic flight.
Their rainbow colours glowing bright.

They dine on gnats and mosquitoes
and other insects I suppose.
For even tiny dragons eat.
Though for their food they must compete

with swallows, swifts and of course
all other flying predators.
To see them as they feed in flight
can fill my heart with pure delight.

But best of all I love to see
my little dragons flying free
in brilliant aerial display.
With which they mark the end of day.

The last rays of the setting sun
high light their colours one by one
All colours of the spectrum show
from scarlet red to indigo.

A living coruscating rainbow,
in which the colours ebb and flow.
This few are privileged to see.
a dance of living jewellery.

Where have you been what have you seen?
My parents ask its pure routine.
I dare not answer truthfully
I choose my words most carefully.

I have been watching dragonflies
which they accept without surprise
I skirt the truth but do not lie
I have been watching Dragons fly.
