The Moon's not here tonight; she’s gone a-roaming.
I saw her only a night or two ago,
But when I looked again for her tonight
She didn’t come. She won’t be back for a while.
The sky is dark and lonely when she's gone
Although there sometimes are the tiny stars
Giving little glitterings afar
And the sky is soft and beautiful, like velvet~
Now without a moon the darkness deep
Closes in, extinguishing the light;
Except for lamps which man has made for us
Glowing from the windows of our homes;
So bright the lights in streets of New York City
They have been seen most easily from space.
Brilliant imitations of the sun,
Without them we would all be caught in darkness.
Let those lights be glowing ever bright
That they may lighten all our hearts at night.
