Local elections were held yesterday in Cuba for municipal assemblies, in which 27,000 candidates vied for more than 12,500 posts. Candidates are nominated by their communities and do not need to be affiliated to the Communist Party. Of the country's 8 million voters, 7 million, or 85%, went to the polls. Run-off elections in races in which no candidate received 50% of the vote will be held on April 26. The election is by secret ballot and the vote count is open to the public. teleSUR
