Known locally as the “Tower of David,” this skyscraper has been called everything in the commercial press from “a den of thieves” to “the world’s tallest slum.” The labels conceal a radical story taking place behind the walls. In 2007, a group of 800 homeless people occupied the insecure building and turned it into a livable community home. Former President Hugo Chavez praised the project as an example of community organization and people power. The residents will soon be moving to new homes. teleSUR
