The U.S. recently stopped a mock intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with its ground-based defense system (GMD). This was the first time the defense system was tested against this type of dummy missile, the same type that North Korea might try to launch against the U.S. The Missile Defense Agency called it an “incredible accomplishment”; but the GMD has only been successful in nine of its prior 17 tests. This test comes amid rising tension with North Korea, which has launched nine missile tests this year.
