"Sit Down" é uma das mais famosas canções dos James, lançada em 1989 pela Rough Trade Records. Na sua versão original de sete minutos, a canção apenas atingiu o 77º posto no UK Singles Chart. Devido a este fraco resultado, o director da sua gravadora, Geoff Travis, disse ao grupo que não eram comercialmente viáveis perante uma audiência de 20 mil espectadores.
A letra da canção foi escrita no Outono de 1988 como agradecimento a duas mulheres que inspiraram Tim Booth - a escritora Doris Lessing e a cantora Patti Smith. Após terem sucesso como parte da cena musical Madchester, com uma versão regravada, o single foi relançado em 1991. Esteve três semanas em 2º lugar no top de singles.
Após o lançamento da compilação da banda, a canção foi remisturada por Apollo 440 e relançada como single pela terceira vez em Novembro de 1998, atingindo o 7º posto, sendo o maior hit dos James desde o lançamento de 1991.
A banda teve de vender os direitos da canção à Mercury Records para ajudar a pagar dívidas.
