The demolition in Varanasi is being carried out as part of the Kashi Vishwanath corridor project, which aims to provide devotees easier access to the Kashi Vishwanath temple that houses one of the pre-eminent Shiva lingas in the country, and is thus considered among the most sacred temples. This has triggered resentment and anger against Yogi Adityanath and Narendra Modi.
