The 14th edition of the Rally Legend was suspended in consequence of an accident that resulted in the death of a spectator and eight others injured.
It happened around 11h50 on Sunday, 09 October 2016, during the twelfth special stage of the event "San Marino 1", held on a street course in Città di San Marino. The roads were treacherous because of heavy rains preceding the start of the competing cars.
During its stint the Renault Clio Maxi #44 entered by team Zeroquattronove-MS and driven by Enrico Bonaso-Alice Palazzi, went out of control on the approach to a sharp left bend along the Via Piana. The car went straight over the run-off area towards Via Giacomini, hit the straw bales and crashed into a group of spectators who were standing behind them, in a very dangerous place.
Nine people, including three members of the same family and a Spanish citizen, suffered injuries. 57-year-old spectator Enrico Anselmino, from Asti, was killed upon impact. His partner, Grazia Agnella, 56, was taken in critical condition to the intensive care unit of the Ospedale Bufalini in Cesena, and their 30-year-old son Davide was also injured in the crash. The driver Enrico Bonaso and his co-driver Alice Palazzi escaped injuries.
After the tragedy, the organizers immediately stopped the special stage and the remainder of the day's events were canceled. A classic rally for historic, among the drivers who were entered in the 2016 Rally Legend were Miki Biasion, Russell Brookes, Hayden Paddon, Juha Kankkunen, Marcus Gronholm and Gilles Panizzi to name just a few.
