Hidden behind a quiet home in Cisarua, West Java,
lies a forgotten Dutch graveyard — silent, abandoned, but full of untold stories.
Among the eight remaining graves,
one stands out…
a marble tomb with two little girls embracing, carved in eternal love.
The inscription reads:
“Gewijd Aan de Nagedachtenis van onze Lievelingen”
— “Dedicated to the memory of our beloved.”
They were Charlotte Jeannette Françoise and Mathilde Cornelie,
who passed away one year apart — in August 1878 and August 1879.
Who were they?
Why were they buried together in this hidden place?
No one knows for sure…
But their statues remain, holding each other,
as if refusing to be separated —
even by death.
A forgotten corner.
A lasting bond.
A story that lingers in the silence of Cisarua.
