Shut down Alligator Alcatraz – US Lawmaker
After touring a federal immigration detention center in the Everglades dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz', Democratic lawmakers from Florida decried the conditions in which the migrants are being held and said the facility needed to be shut down.
"What we saw, the conditions that we saw inside this internment camp, which it is nothing less than that description, were really appalling. I'll walk you through just a few of the really egregious, disturbing, disgusting conditions," said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Saturday.
According to the members of Congress, the detainees are being held in cages that contain only bunk beds and toilets. There are 32 men in each cage and three toilets, which also serve as the source for drinking water.
Congressman Max Frost, who had hoped to meet with relatives of constituents, said the conditions weren't sanitary.
