Scientists have just uncovered over 86,000 hidden earthquakes beneath Yellowstone — thanks to cutting-edge machine learning. This staggering number is 10 times higher than previously known and includes thousands of earthquake swarms, which are often linked to volcanic unrest.
Most of these swarms were found creeping along deep fault lines inside the Yellowstone Caldera — one of the world’s most dangerous supervolcanoes. But are they a sign of an eruption?
Experts say no… not yet. These tremors are likely caused by pressurized water and gas underground, not magma. But similar activity has already caused steam-driven explosions, like the violent blast at Biscuit Basin last summer.
This breakthrough could help scientists detect volcanic patterns faster than ever before — and potentially save lives.
