Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has urged all parties to refer to the disputed maritime area off Sabah as the Sulawesi Sea, not “Ambalat” — a term he says Indonesia uses to assert its territorial claims.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 5), Mohamad explained that under international law, especially UNCLOS 1982, maritime boundaries are determined by the low-water line, not the high-tide mark — a principle Malaysia follows, though Indonesia disagrees.
Mohamad stressed that Malaysia is pursuing the issue peacefully while maintaining strong ties with Indonesia, and confirmed Sabah’s full involvement in all technical talks.
