Clouds of smoke blanket sky in northern Spain as wildfires rage
Heavy clouds of smoke cover roads, towns and landscapes in Spain’s northern region of Ourense on Aug. 15, 2025 as the country battles 14 major fires driven by high winds and aggravated by heat. In the village of Vilar de Condes, neighbors, old and young, stood in the streets as fire raged near their town. They gathered close to 2,000 liters of water in buckets to use in case the wind blew the flames in their direction. Across the country, wildfires have already killed seven people and burned an area the size of London.
