Suspended Bolivian opposition governor Camacho released from jail
Luis Fernando Camacho, suspended governor of Santa Cruz and a prominent Bolivian opposition leader, is released on Aug. 29, 2025 from the high-security prison in San Pedro de Chonchocoro after nearly three years, to serve house arrest. Camacho, who rose to prominence as a civic leader during the resistance that ousted former president Evo Morales in 2019, was detained in 2022. This week, the Bolivian courts lifted his pretrial detention in four cases in which he is under investigation, and he will now be able to defend himself while free. Camacho intends to resume his duties as governor of Santa Cruz, a position he never formally relinquished, he said as left prison.
