A woman has revealed how she made the startling discovery that she had been having seizures for years – and had no idea about it!

For years, Jane Rawcliffe was under the assumption that she was experiencing severe panic attacks or a trauma response before she finally received a diagnosis.

She told how it was discovered that the seizures she was having were due to her condition, Craniocervical Instability (CCI) which causes neck instability.

Jane, 23, who is currently residing in Budapest, Hungary, said: “I have been having little seizures for years and I didn’t even know it.

“I had always thought it was a panic attack or a trauma response. I thought seizures had to be where you’re tweaking out, completely gone, unconscious.”

In addition to Jane suffering with neck issues, she frequently dislocates many of her joints because of CCI like her fingers, shoulders, knees, hips and spine.

Jane had been having two types of seizures with one of them being focal seizures. A type of seizure that affects only one side of the brain and caused symptoms like ‘jerky movements' and a loss of consciousness.

With this, she explained that she also experienced déjà vu, nauseousness and a sense of dread to the point where it felt like the ‘world is complexly ending’ for Jane.

However, having experienced these symptoms at least once since she was three years old, Jane had previously been told it was caused by other things like an anxiety or a panic attack.

It wasn’t until she had a convulsive seizure where it became very visually obvious that she was having a seizure that she finally uncovered the truth that she’d been having them almost her entire life.

After learning the news, it left Jane feeling scared that so many seizures had occurred before without her noticing.

Talking about her story, Jane explained: “In my case, my seizures were being caused by neck instability.

"Essentially, I have a genetic connective disease that results in a lot of hypermobility but also instability in my joints.

“My joints basically dislocate all the time and that happens with my fingers, shoulders, knees, hips and my spine.

“I didn’t know that was happening were seizures largely because the seizures I was experiencing was from the time I was three years old were tonic colonic seizures, so I wasn’t having convulsions or completely passing out.

“It would essentially feel like either like I was zoning out but different or it felt like a panic attack. It was happening to me for my entire life pretty much, all the time, every single day.

“No one really paid attention to it until I had a convulsive seizure that was very obviously seizure, one that you would recognise.”
