New Delhi – In a serious security lapse, two golden ‘kalash’ and other valuables worth about ₹1.5 crore were stolen from a Jain religious gathering held at the 15 August Park inside Delhi’s Red Fort. The theft occurred on Wednesday during the ongoing Daslakshan Mahaparv, a 10-day festival.
According to the FIR, the missing items include a golden ‘jhari’ (urn), a 760-gram gold coconut, and a 115-gram smaller ‘jhari’ embedded with diamonds, emeralds, and rubies. The artefacts, used in Jain rituals, belong to businessman Sudhir Jain, who regularly brought them for ceremonial use.
CCTV footage shows the thief dressed as a Jain priest walking away with a bag suspected to contain the valuables. Police confirmed the suspect has been identified and assured an arrest soon.
Organisers say the items disappeared while preparations were underway to receive guests. “The thief took advantage of the rush. These objects are tied to our faith beyond their monetary worth,” Sudhir Jain told reporters. Puneet Jain, a relative, claimed the same individual had earlier targeted three other temples.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the event a day before the incident. The religious programme will continue until 9 September.
