A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Euboea, Greece, in the early hours of Tuesday, shaking residents awake and rattling buildings in Athens, just 45 kilometers away. The epicenter was located near the seaside resort of Nea Styra, but thankfully, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Greece lies on several active fault lines, making it one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone regions. This tremor adds to a string of recent seismic events, including a 6.1 quake near Crete in May and thousands of tremors around Santorini earlier this year that forced evacuations.
While this latest quake wasn’t deadly, it’s a stark reminder of the region’s volatile geology and the ever-present risk of stronger quakes.
