MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has questioned the fairness of university admissions after top scorer Edward Wong Yi Xian, who achieved a perfect CGPA and 99.9% merit rating, was rejected by Universiti Malaya’s accounting programme through UPUonline.
He noted that Wong had earlier been offered a place via the “open channel” route with fees 10 times higher, raising concerns that money outweighed merit.
Dr Wee also disputed UM’s claim of only 85 available places, citing data showing higher graduate numbers, and urged greater transparency and reforms amid Malaysia’s accountant shortage.
