Pope-shaped cakes mark Leo XIV’s birthday in his former Peruvian diocese
Peruvians from Pope Leo XIV’s former diocese, in the city of Chiclayo, marked the pontiff's 70th birthday on Sunday, September 14, with a celebration that included cakes and songs.
In the Monsefu district, in northern Chiclayo, the Bakers’ Association gathered with cakes depicting images of the Pope to celebrate his birthday.
Originally from Chicago, the Pope spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru and has dual US-Peruvian nationality. The Pope, whose birth name is Robert Francis Prevost, served as Bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023. He became a cardinal in 2023.
On May 8, he was elected to succeed the late Pope Francis, becoming the first U.S.-Peruvian leader of the 1.4-billion-member Catholic Church.
