U.S. workers are increasingly struggling to find full-time jobs as the labor market weakens, according to The Wall Street Journal. The unemployment rate stands at 4.3%, but a broader measure that includes discouraged workers and those stuck in part-time roles hit 8.1% in August, its highest in nearly four years. Economists note one in four job seekers has been out of work for at least six months, compared with one in five a year ago. Many Americans are turning to lower-paying part-time work without benefits, and postings for such jobs have risen 50% in three years. Recent data showed more unemployed workers than job openings for the first time since 2020, while workers’ confidence in finding new jobs fell to the lowest level since 2013.
