Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel intends to dismantle what he called a political and media ‘blockade’ led by Qatar and China, speaking at a Jerusalem event welcoming a bipartisan delegation of US state lawmakers.
Addressing attendees at the “Fifty States – One Israel” gathering at Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Netanyahu alleged that Beijing and Doha fund a ‘media blockade’ operating in Western countries, including the United States.
"We are fighting this, and we will also invest a lot of money, large resources in efforts to repel this part of the blockade," he noted.
“The media blockade that is financed with huge money, both by Qatar and by other countries like China, and they are also operating in the West and no less so in the US,” he added.
China and Qatar have not commented on Netanyahu's accusations at the time of publication.
The prime minister also warned Western nations about political pressure from ‘vocal, violent’ Muslim communities, which he claimed had hampered Israel’s access to weapons from abroad.
"In the coming years, we will need to strengthen our own arms industries, so that we have independence in armaments in the industrial capacity to produce them, and therefore we will break through this blockade," he stated.
Netanyahu dismissed concerns of global isolation, stressing Israel’s close alliance with Washington.
"Have they achieved global isolation? No. The US is with us and so are many other countries [...] Just as we succeeded with the military blockade, we will also succeed with the political blockade," Netanyahu added.
The prime minister welcomed what organisers described as the largest bipartisan US delegation of state legislators to visit Israel, with 250 lawmakers from all 50 states scheduled for a week-long program.
