OpenAI Hires Ex-xAI Finance Chief To Oversee Infrastructure Spending Amid Musk Feud

OpenAI has hired Mike Liberatore, former finance chief at Elon Musk’s xAI, as its business finance officer to oversee infrastructure spending, according to CNBC. Liberatore, who left xAI in July after only three months, will report to CFO Sarah Friar and work with Greg Brockman’s team managing compute contracts and capital. The move comes amid an intensifying feud between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk, who co-founded OpenAI together in 2015 but later fell out as the company shifted into a commercial venture backed by Microsoft. Valued at $500 billion, OpenAI is ramping up commitments like its $300 billion Oracle deal. Liberatore previously held senior finance roles at Airbnb, SquareTrade, eBay, and PayPal. At xAI, he helped arrange $10 billion in debt and equity financing along with major data center expansion.
