Paleontologists find porpoise fossil in Peru's ancient seabed

The skeleton of an eight- and 12-million-year-old fossilized porpoise was unveiled on Wednesday, September 17, by paleontologists in Peru, who say it was buried underground in a desert on the country's central coast that was once part of the ancient Pacific Ocean.

The fossil remains were discovered in July in the Ocucaje Desert, a hot area located approximately 200 miles south of Lima, according to paleontologist Mario Urbina, who participated in the discovery, at a press conference.

Urbina said the desert was part of a geological layer of sea that remained for 45 million years.

Researchers at the institute, who presented the fossil of the porpoise species for the first time, said the new skeleton discovered in Ocucaje is approximately “between eight and 12 million years old.”
