Tropical Storm Gabrielle has officially formed in the Atlantic, marking the end of an unusual quiet stretch during the peak of hurricane season. The storm is currently tracking toward Bermuda and could strengthen into a hurricane in the coming days. Bermuda is expected to face gusty winds up to 70 mph, heavy rainfall, and dangerous surf early next week. Meanwhile, parts of the U.S. East Coast and the Caribbean may experience rough surf and rip currents.
But Gabrielle isn’t the only system meteorologists are watching. A tropical wave near Africa has a low chance of developing now but could strengthen later this week. With ocean temperatures across the Gulf and Caribbean soaring near 90°F, the risk of rapid tropical development is increasing.
Don’t let the calm fool you—hurricane season is heating up fast.
