China has renewed its threat to annex Taiwan, with Defence Minister Dong Jun declaring that the “restoration” of the island is inevitable and part of the postwar international order. Warning against separatist moves, he vowed Beijing would never allow Taiwan independence to succeed. In a veiled warning to Washington, Dong said China was prepared to counter any external military interference. His remarks come amid daily Chinese military activity around Taiwan, including the recent passage of the Fujian aircraft carrier.
