वित्त मंत्री ने घोषणा की कि GST की दरों को चार स्लैब से घटाकर अब केवल दो स्लैब किया जाएगा। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी चाहते हैं कि इससे खासकर गरीब, मध्यम वर्गीय परिवार और छोटे-मध्यम उद्योग को फायदा मिले। सीतारमण ने स्पष्ट किया कि इस सुधार के बाद सामान की कीमतें कम होंगी, जिससे लोग ज्यादा खरीदारी करेंगे। उन्होंने उदाहरण दिया कि यदि कोई साबुन ज्यादा मात्रा में खरीदता है, तो निर्माता उत्पादन बढ़ाएगा, जिससे रोजगार बढ़ेंगे और सरकार को अधिक टैक्स मिलेगा। यह एक सकारात्मक चक्र है जो अर्थव्यवस्था के लिए अच्छा होगा। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि GST लागू होने से पहले टैक्स देने वाले उद्यमियों की संख्या 65 लाख थी, जो अब बढ़कर 1.5 करोड़ हो गई है।
