Kanpur: A 20-year-old woman, Akanksha (also called Mahi) of Sujnipur village, Rura, Kanpur Dehat, was strangled to death by her live-in boyfriend, Suraj Kumar, police said. After killing her, Suraj and an accomplice, Ashish Kumar, packed the body into a suitcase and dumped it in the Yamuna near Banda, about 100 km away.
DCP (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary said Akanksha’s mother, Vijayshree, filed a missing person report at Hanumant Vihar police station on August 8. Police later detained Suraj and, during interrogation, he confessed. He told investigators he had another girlfriend and that Akanksha had discovered his WhatsApp chats. He admitted that, following an argument on July 21, he strangled Akanksha in their room, called Ashish to help, and disposed of the body from Chilla bridge at about 2:30 am.
Suraj allegedly misled the family for three days by sending messages from Akanksha’s phone. He later dropped the victim’s phone on a train, he told police. Officers say Suraj broke down and confessed after being confronted with mobile location data and call records. A kidnapping case was registered on the mother’s complaint; further legal action is underway.
