Thousands join Athens protest supporting hunger-striking father of Tempi train crash victim
Thousands of people rallied in Athens on Sunday, September 21, in support of the father of a victim of Greece’s deadliest train disaster, who entered the seventh day of a hunger strike outside the parliament, demanding the right to exhume his son’s body.
Panos Routsi, whose 22-year-old son Dennis was among the 57 killed in the 2023 Tempi collision, says prosecutors have blocked his requests, accusing authorities of concealing the truth about the crash. He also vowed to continue his protest until families get answers.
Protesters gathered outside the parliament, wrote messages of solidarity, lit candles, left flowers at a temporary memorial for the crash victims and chanted “murderers” as they pressed for justice.
The head-on collision between a passenger and a freight train near Tempi, central Greece, shocked the country, sparked nationwide outrage over rail safety failures and has left relatives struggling for closure more than two years later.
