Chandrapur (Maharashtra): In a shocking incident, 19-year-old Anurag Anil Borkar, who scored 99.99 percentile (AIR 1475 OBC) in NEET UG 2025, died by suicide on Monday, just hours before leaving for Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, for MBBS admission.

Police said Anurag was found hanging at his home in Navargaon, Sindewahi tehsil. A suicide note recovered at the spot revealed his unwillingness to pursue MBBS. “I don’t want to do MBBS just for how much a doctor earns. A businessman can also earn that much… I don’t want to do all this,” the note reportedly read.

Sources claim Anurag wished to study medicine abroad, but family pressure to join a government college in India may have triggered his decision. He had attempted NEET twice — this year securing a much better rank after being dissatisfied with his earlier admission.

Police are verifying the note’s authenticity and questioning the family.

The case highlights the rising mental health crisis among students. As per NCRB data, India reported 13,044 student suicides in 2022, a sharp rise from 5,425 in 2001. The Supreme Court recently flagged this as a systemic concern, urging urgent action.
