Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official jet, the “Wings of Zion,” took an unusual southern route to New York, deliberately avoiding most European airspace. The detour appears designed to evade countries that could enforce ICC arrest warrants issued in November 2024 against Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Flight tracking data shows the jet bypassed central Europe, including France, adding approximately 373 miles (600 km) to the journey. Ireland had announced it would arrest Netanyahu if he entered, while Spain said it would cooperate with the ICC investigation. France granted overflight permission, but Israel chose not to use it, and Italy questioned whether an arrest would even be feasible.
Netanyahu is set to address the UN General Assembly in New York before heading to Washington for meetings with US President Donald Trump. Israel strongly denies all accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
