Back down on the River Mersey, where the true history of Stockport is etched into the sandstone. We followed a forgotten path along the bank and found this huge old overflow grid, a massive relic of Victorian flood control or an old mill tailrace. Standing right next to the current, the sound is immense, but the heavy iron grid keeps the secrets locked down. It’s a perfect example of unseen infrastructure, channeling a forgotten river or stream into the main flow.
