The world's oldest head of state, 92-year-old President Paul Biya formally kicked off his bid for an eighth term in office during a rally in the Far North town of Maroua on Tuesday.

Footage shows Biya arriving with a motorcade and addressing a sea of supporters and local leaders, in a rare public appearance.

"People of the Far North region, Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends. I am deeply touched to see that so many of you have come to meet me. Thank you for your warm welcome. Thank you for your affection. Thank you for the support you have shown me year after year," the president said.

"Despite the difficulties of everyday life. Despite the false predictions, the slander, the fabrications. Yes, dear friends. You have remained loyal to the institutions since I assumed the highest office," he added.

Biya has governed since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His campaign pledges emphasised continuity, citing infrastructure projects, public services, and national security as his priority areas. Critics accuse Biya of suppressing dissent and centralising power.

The elections take place on October 12.
