Watch | Ram Madhav On RSS At 100: Adaptation, Ideology, And Hindu Rashtra

In conversation with Editor Chinki Sinha, RSS leader Ram Madhav reflects on the organisation’s 100-year journey and its evolving relationship with politics. He explains that during its first 25 years under British rule, the RSS had no involvement in politics and faced restrictions from the colonial government.

After India’s independence, the organisation encountered challenges, including a ban following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. This period marked the first internal debate on political participation, leading some members to form the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1950.

Over the decades, the RSS witnessed multiple political transformations — from the Jana Sangh to the Janata Party, and later the BJP. Today, with a strong RSS member serving as Prime Minister, the organisation continues to maintain its stance of staying separate from active politics while shaping national ideology from the background.
