Out Of Darkness — Out Of Darkness 1970 (UK, Psychedelic, Blues, Christian Rock)
The band formed in 1968 in London, playing music in the style of Jimi Hendrix from the very beginning. Having signed a contract with Key Records, the band began recording their debut album, spending just a week on it. "Out Of Darkness" became the best-selling English gospel rock album of 1971. The band played concerts at London's top clubs, the Flamingo and the Marquee, and also performed at the Reading, Phun City, and Jesus Revolution festivals in Edinburgh, the latter of which was broadcast on the BBC. Christians hadn't yet played this kind of music in England, so Out Of Darkness' concerts were something of a culture shock for believers. When vocalist Tony Goodman left the band, lineup changes occurred, and with a new singer, the band seemed poised to rebound. However, difficulties signing a major label led to the band disbanding in 1974. Guitarist Ray Powell later moved to Jamaica. Tim Anderson became a teacher, and Carl Grant and Bruce Duncan emigrated to Canada.
