A temple vandalism case in Chakur (Chhapur) village of Saharanpur district, under the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency, has escalated into a communal and political flashpoint. Earlier this month, idols inside a Shiva temple were found vandalized, triggering anger among locals and protests led by groups like the Hindu Suraksha Seva Sangh.

During one such protest, Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan, who represents Kairana, visited the village to appeal for peace and demand strict punishment for those behind the act. However, Iqra alleged that instead of cooperation, she faced verbal abuse from some BJP supporters.

She accused a close aide of former BJP MP Pradeep Chaudhary of calling her “Mulli” and “terrorist”, and of insulting her late father and brother. Videos circulating online show Iqra visibly emotional while condemning hate politics, as police personnel stood by.

The MP also claimed that while a complaint was filed, the accused were granted bail shortly after, calling the move “lenient” and “insensitive.” She further alleged that the insults were meant to provoke communal tensions and questioned whether the former MP would publicly condemn the act.

Police confirmed registering a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for vandalism and related offenses, and said that investigations into both the temple defacement and the protest incidents are ongoing.

The incident has drawn national attention, with Iqra Hasan’s remarks being shared widely as an example of growing polarization in western Uttar Pradesh.
