Taal Volcano spews ash in series of minor eruptions
Taal Volcano spewed ash and steam reaching up to two kilometers after a series of minor eruptions on Sunday, October 26, the state volcanology and seismology agency said.
Time-lapse footage by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed two brief minor phreatomagmatic eruptions from the volcano's crater. A minor phreatic, or a steam-driven, eruption was also recorded early on Sunday local time.
A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma comes into direct contact with water inside a volcano's crater, triggering an explosive reaction that emits gas, steam, and sometimes magma itself, according to volcanologists.
The alert for the Taal volcano, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of Manila, remains at level 1 on its five-tier scale, indicating a low level of unrest.
