The ITER project, based in southern France, is the world’s largest experiment in nuclear fusion — the same process that powers the Sun. Backed by 35 nations including the USA, China, India, Japan, and EU members, it aims to produce ten times more energy than it consumes (500 MW output from 50 MW input). The reactor, a tokamak design, uses powerful magnetic fields to fuse hydrogen isotopes, releasing immense clean energy. In 2025, Westinghouse Electric Company began assembling key reactor sections under a €168 million contract. Despite technical complexity, five of nine reactor sectors have already been completed, marking major progress toward sustainable fusion power.
