Malaysia sees decline in foreign workers, pushes for local hiring

As of Oct 15, Malaysia recorded 2.13 million active, legally registered foreign workers, a 13% drop from the previous year’s 2.45 million.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the decline reflects efforts to reduce reliance on foreign labour across all sectors.

He said, to boost local employment, the government has frozen new foreign worker quotas since March 2023 and will implement a Multi-Tier Levy system in 2026.
