As of Monday, Nov. 3, this map shows all U.S. government shutdowns by president and by individual shutdown, during which federal workers were and are furloughed, including the current shutdown.
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to finalize the federal budget and appropriation bills, leaving agencies without the legal authority to fund operations. These shutdowns often happen due to disagreements between Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate.
