Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was charged with stealing $5 million in COVID-19 disaster funds and funneling part of it into her 2021 congressional campaign through a straw-donor scheme. Prosecutors say she and her brother laundered the FEMA overpayment tied to their family health-care company and later filed a false tax return to hide personal and political spending. She faces up to 53 years in prison if convicted.
