Romania’s Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu on November 25 described a Russian drone incursion into Romanian airspace as the latest provocation from Moscow. Fighter jets from Romania and Germany scrambled to intercept the drone, which penetrated deeper than any previous incursion and was the first to occur during daylight.
Fragments of the drone, which carried no explosive payload, were later recovered. This marks the 13th reported breach of Romanian airspace by Russian drones since the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
U.S. troops stationed at Romania’s Mihail Kogalniceanu air base reaffirmed their commitment to NATO deterrence, with Chief Warrant Officer 3 Eric Scharf emphasizing readiness and partnership with Romanian forces.
