On November 27, 2025, a powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck offshore near Sumatra, Indonesia, with its epicenter located about 45 km northwest of Sinabang on Simeulue Island in Aceh province. The quake, occurring at a depth of roughly 25 km, caused strong shaking felt across Sinabang, parts of Aceh, and as far as Medan on Sumatra’s east coast. Despite its strength, no significant damage or casualties have been reported, and the Indonesia Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat. The tremor occurred near the highly active Sunda megathrust fault zone and is part of a series of seismic events in Indonesia this month. Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes due to tectonic plate movements, but the country has made progress in disaster preparedness following past major quakes and tsunamis.
