Weak US gun laws remain unaddressed

It has been a year since a mentally ill gunman critically wounded US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others - including a US federal judge.

The fatal incident spurred President Barack Obama to call for a national dialogue over gun laws, there has been little further discussion. There are bills currently in Congress that seek to outlaw magazines for high-capacity handguns, but so far they have been able to garner sparse support from lawmakers.

Instead, the House of Representatives recently passed legislation forcing states with tight gun controls to honour concealed-carry permits issued by other states.
